Live Gigs: The Fall @ Melbourne Festival 2015

The Fall has broken my record of seeing artist/band over more than two nights, they played three nights in a row and I saw all of them, I guess three isn’t that much more, well only one if I can count right? But more than two which has happen more times than I can count. This was the last three nights in Melbourne before flying back and what a way to finish off this trip and seeing The Fall is a trip in itself so just times it by three now. Each night was better than previous one if they did more shows they would have taking off or levitating or something. Each night playing a different setlist as well, which keep me coming back for more. This photo is by someone on twitter which I didn’t take note of there name, hope that’s OK? It’s such a great image of Mark E. Smith.csn36oquyaabgz3

At the time I only had some of there old stuff like the greatest hits/best of comp called 50,000 Fall Fans Can’t Be Wrong and the great 1982 album Hex Enduction Hour and a few other bits and pieces here and there. I’ve always wanted to see them and now I have, three times! They played so much new stuff which was so great it and it was like why I haven’t I heard this before? So pretty much when and got it or order it afterwards. I love bands that just keep moving forward so now I’m digging that much more than the old stuff. It’s so great when a band/artist does that, not to rest on the past and then the new stuff is even better if you go and check it out. Saying that when they did play Mr. Pharmacist at the end of the second night it was so wicked to see/hear it live. They have come over to tour Australia a couple of times in the last few years but never come over here in west so it yet another reason to go over east.

Mark E. Smith, who’s the leader of The Fall or the frontman or some would he is The Fall, the only original member left now because he can’t really kick himself out of the band. It’s like a bit of a running joke now maybe not for those old members, I guess. This line-up at the moment live is killer, it’s no wonder it’s lasted the longest so far. He’s such an individual singer and songwriter, really does his own thing, writing these last few posts you could say that about the other artists/bands maybe I have and that’s something to look for without even knowing. I did read his book before going over east and it’s like what I would think sitting around and talking and having a few pints with maybe that’s how they wrote it plus wasn’t really think it was going be something more. I can’t think of anyone more English right now than him too!

So the rest of band line-up right now and off-course who played these three nights: Elena Poulou keyboards & vocals from 2002 plus is been married since 2001, it’s no leave your coat and handbag back stage with her just wear them all night or have them next to you on a fold-out chair, you never know when you need them? Dave Spurr plays bass and has done since 2006, stand behind Poulou on stage and is in the photo below. Keiron Melling is the drummer since 2006 and in far left in the photo below and last but not least is Pete Greenway on guitar and once again he’s been playing in The Fall since 2006 on the far right. They do have a sometimes have second drummer but not for these shows. Could you find a more English looking band too? I don’t think so! All pale and white, you guys should have got out in sun while you where here.

Smith is so very entertaining to watch live, if you never see him or them I’ll tell you a bit more what the hell happens those nights. My ears don’t normality ring because I’ve been to so much loud gigs they have got use to it by now or something. I never put ear thingys in too it because just makes it so you can’t hear the music right. Well after The Fall’s nights my head was buzzing because it’s not your normal gig sound because you see it seem like a new trick Mark has picked up in the last few years, he totally fucks with all the amps on stage and I look over at the sound guy when he’s doing this on the side of stage and he’s just looking pissed off. So want he does is he turns everything up and down, well mainly up until well sometimes it’s just feed-backing on itself. He used other members microphones too like the ones they should be using for backing vocals and also gives mics out to the crowd to sing along too. At one point he started pulling off Keiron Melling’s drum-kits mics to sing into, it was just crazy. The roadies after a while were just smiling but shacking their heads, waiting until they can mic it all up again. Guitar player, Peter Greenway would turnaround and put his amp settings back right but after finishing the song, they never stopped, the drummer, guitar, bass player and his wife too. Elena Poulou’s keyboards he did same thing and even started playing/hitting the wrong notes/keys too. I couldn’t stop smiling at all this, it was so much fun but I don’t remember seeing anyone on stage smile once over the three night they just came on and played. It was just like a force of nature, so intense would the right word to use here.

After the final night and a quick second encore The Fall was gone but they started to play the Tromatic Reflexxions by Von Südenfed over the PA, I love that album too could be another Classic Album I could write about. It’s German electronica outfit Mouse on Mars with Mark E. Smith on vocals, previously the only newish thing I had by him, that’s changed now. Also it was pretty much the last night at the Hub and Melbourne Festival so had to have a few more drinks. I’d seen some other artists/bands over the ten days I was there even art shows and stuff at Mel Festival and just in Melbourne in general, I love it over there, great town,  it’s great place to visit but these gigs was such a great way to finish it up, full-stop.
