Well, here’s another album I’m looking forward this year or it’s a whole album of cover songs too. Maybe this album should be called Mark Kozelek & Mike Patton Sings Favorites but I guess Mike’s only on a couple of tracks and just doing backing vocals but that’s both of them above/below in the studio recording/singing those tracks. This is a bit of a dream come true for me, I love both these blokes and they’re both doing I’m Not In Love by 10CC and David Bowie’s Win which is from the 1975 album Young Americans which Mark has already shout out to it in the lyrics on Sun Kil Moon’s Benji album and has gone on saying it was the first album he got as a kid. You can already listen to Win here on his website and I’ve included the YouTube clip at the bottom of the page too. Anyway both Mark and Mike could do a whole album anytime which I wouldn’t be complaining about if they did that. I can even imaged them doing some great duets together, their voices do and would go really well with each other.
Anyway all these songs on this album are covers off course and it’s not just Mark’s favorites but it’s his friends and loved ones favorites tracks too. This time recording with only piano and no acoustic guitars or any other instruments on this album so that’s going to a bit different that his other album of covers. He does love his covers and whole albums of them previous he has done Sings Christmas Carols back in 2014, Like Rats in 2013, The Finally LP in 2008 which was compilation of mostly covers up to that point, then both 2001’s If You Want Blood and What’s Next to the Moon are collections of AC/DC covers also the Rock ‘n’ Roll Singer EP from 2000 was too and plus 2005 Sun Kil Moon’s Tiny Cities was a whole album of songs by Modest Mouse. I got to say now if I haven’t already said before but I do love a great cover and whole albums are pretty wicked too in my opinion.
The opening song Send In The Clowns he’s done before on his Finally LP but maybe he’s not happy with that version anymore and needs to redo it now. It was original written by Stephen Sondheim for a musical in 1973 called A Little Night Music but it’s been record by heaps of artist since then to name them all here. The second track Moon River was written by Henry Mancini & Johnny Mercer for the movie Breakfast At Tiffany’s in 1961. Next two songs are the ones with Mike Patton then I guessing it’s Waylon Jennings’ track Amanda not Bostons’ or Green Days’ songs with the same girls name, it was written by Bob McDill in 1973. O Holy Night is yet another old Christmas song, he really can’t help himself. Mainstreet must be the Bob Seger track from 1977. Off course the next one is from the movie The Wizard of Oz and sung by , wrote by Harold Arlen & E.Y. Harburg in 1939. The next track must be the old Traditional song make famous in the John Wayne movie from 1959 Rio Bravo. The most famous song called Another Day is by Paul McCartney from 1970 but he’s not listed in the songwriters credits on his website so maybe it’s another song called Another Day, Dream Theater has one or is there another one I haven’t found. Something Stupid was make famous by Frank Sinatra and his daughter, Nancy Sinatra in 1967 but original written by C. Carson Parks in 1963. Float On is yet another Modest Mouse track off course which is only from 2004 so that makes it the newest song in this collection of songs and last track.
It’s once again like his other albums of covers it’s a real big mix bag of songs, it’s always interesting see what tracks artists picks to re-records themselves but I do wish he did a studio recording of The Weeping Song by Nick Cave, oh well we do have his live version, I guess. Mimi Parker from the band Low is also on the album too which didn’t say before which I’m guessing she is singing backing vocals too. So it’s released on May 27 through Caldo Verde Records and hopefully sometime soon we can pre-order it.
