Live Gigs: Drones @ Rosie’s + Wicked Songs: Then They Came For Me by The Drones

So just to confirm now this song really has to be my fave track from the new album Feelin Kinda Free by The Drones. It’s got to have a post just for itself and about the gig. They played it last night too on the second night of the Aussie tour, pretty much play the whole album minus the track Sometimes but I was thinking they wouldn’t do that one.

If you want to know they also played I See Seaweed, Six Ways To Sunday, Jezebel, I Am The Supercargo and finishing the night with River Of Tears. I should write more really so Rosie’s was like a sardine can, I’ve never seen it so full, must have been sold out last night. When I seen them there last year it wasn’t so over flowing maybe it’s the releasing a new album or something. Playing all the new fast, up-beat songs early then the new slower ones, then a few old ones and finishing the main set with Shut Down Seti and encore was “an old song” Supercargo, tracks from Havilah album are now old songs you know? Then a epic version of River Of Tears. All these older songs seem now to be played in a deconstruction, fucked up kind-off way but even more so obvious is Six Ways which now thinking about I never see a gig of The Drones that song not been played at so it’s good that’s one of my faves.

What else? Gaz was wearing his ops desert storm t-shirt and it seem like he was going to war too.  I should really say more because I love this band but they came on stage with some silly comments at the very start but began to play and didn’t stop, it was so intense from start to finish. They’re one of the best live bands going around the traps, go and see them if they come to your town.

So now here’s the best video clip ever made in the history of mankind, it’s total black screen uploaded by someone on YouTube, which thinking about it nothing could be better really so I will not write anymore and let your mind fill with these words and images, OK?

Then They Came For Me lyrics by Gareth Liddiard

i can hear a Jericho Trumpet
but the sky’s perfectly clear
whether it’s real or recollection
it’s like i’m stranded on a pier
watching waves of emigration
being rewound off the beach
while the long road to unconsciousness
ebbs out at my heels
now i’m walking the halls of Charles de Gaulle
with a fresh minted boarding pass
i got a date with Ben Gurion
standing in a subway
feeling like i’ve overstayed
waiting with a sack for the Amtrak
and a ticket out of JFK
and when they came for him
i didn’t do anything
and when they came for her
i didn’t do nothing
and when they came for him
i didn’t say a thing
and when they came for her
still not a word
you see that barren blue under the engines
there ain’t a fish left in the Levantine sea
there ain’t a dolphin torch in all the West Bank’s flanks
now they’re lit by electricity
the wise man knows that all things flow
through tubes to their destination
through the sewers of Athens and the odd BUK missile
and the Underground’s tube stations
i never knew the lure of monsters
i’ve never been one for crusades
but now i hear a Jericho Trumpet
you can’t be sure you’re doing much more
than playing for some rumoured stakes
so when the pilgrims become bandits on their transits
well it’s time to make your get away
and when they came for him
i didn’t do anything
and when they came for her
i didn’t do nothing
and when they came for him
i didn’t say a thing
and when they came for her
still not a word
now the red top rags are all flying black flags
the lowlifes are making gains
you’d be thinking they were staff writers
the gulls in Crete are sharpening their beaks
seamstresses sew in hell
a tailored cut, a perfect fit
a skull grinding it’s teeth on each lapel
and when they came for him
i didn’t do anything
and when they came for her
i didn’t do nothing
and when they came for him
i didn’t say a thing
and when they came for her
still not a word.
