Wicked Songs: Eagle Rock by Daddy Cool/Ross Wilson

Right, it’s my younger sister’s birthday today so I’m going to put one of her fave tracks as little kid up here, I don’t know really if she looks at my blog anytime but if you do “Happy B’day!” I did a post about CountDown the other day with some songs I really remember well as a young kid but didn’t included this one but looking at the dates of released it would have been before that. I was trying to figure which Daddy Cool one we had on vinyl, it would have be own old folks record but it come out in different forms over the 70’s with 7″, 12″ singles plus was on the album Daddy Who? then comp album Daddy’s Coolest which was like their first greatest hits album in 80’s. It seem if you want a small history or not you’re getting it now, OK?

Eagle Rock released first as as a 7″ single on a label called Sparmac in 1971 which released the debut album Daddy Who? the same year in July then Reprise Records re-released international in 1971/2 both the album and the single. Also the band pretty quickly moved to Wizard Records here in Australia in 1971 too and who then even reissue the album as Daddy Gold in 1975 changing the pink and black to black and gold. Then in 82 re-released the single again as a Maxi 12″ single over ten year after it was original release which is the same year as the Daddy’s Coolest came out, maybe that’s what we had but I don’t know?

So you have to jump around like an idiot when you listen to this song just like the band in this video, OK? I think that’s the main reason we like it as little kids because you just jump around like idiots while the songs playing. Should still jump around like idiots no matter what age you are, hey? I was trying to convince my sister to come to Meredith Festival this year with us but she didn’t seem to want too, Ross Wilson the songwriter of the track is playing at it and promising to play it live but it does seem like along way to go just for one song but few others are playing which I was thinking she might dig or does dig already the main other one was Sheila E but now it’s sold out I guess she’s not, should have got her a ticket and made her go, kidnapped her or something!

I’m going to write a little about Ross Wilson now and tell you all who are reading this that don’t who he is and a few other things he’s done since Eagle Rock and Daddy Cool. He was the producer for the another big Aussie band from the 70’s the Skyhooks plus also for Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons. Then in the 80’s he formed new band called Mondo Rock which all three are pretty big acts in Australia maybe if your reading this oversea you would never have heard of them? As producer he did one of my all-time fave albums from the decade The Johnnys’ Highlights Of A Dangerous Life and then in the 90’s worked with yet another big Aussie act of the time The Screaming Jets. Not forgetting the other member of Daddy Cool which are Gary Young on drums, Ross Hannaford on guitar and Wayne Duncan on the bass.

The album Daddy Who? by Daddy Cool which the album cover art work is the main image for the post. It was included in the book called The 100 best Australian albums from 2010 which I have and the five CD comp album, overall the album came in at number 14 in the book. I remember only some of the other tracks on the album and I did have them and looked after all those records for years and years but then now don’t have them because an ex-gf gave it all away when we broke-up so can you please fill in this blank space for me ____________  thank you. My sister was even playing the song not that long ago because she just downloaded it herself too!

Eagle Rock lyrics by Ross Wilson

Now listen,
Oh we’re steppin’ out
I’m gonna turn around,
Gonna turn around once and we’ll do the Eagle Rock.
Oh momma!
Oh you’re rocking well!
Hmm yeah you do it so well,
Well we do it so well when we do the Eagle Rock
Now momma,
Yeah you’re rockin’ fine!
Why don’t you give me a sign?
Hmm just give me a sign and we’ll do the Eagle Rock.

Hey Hey Hey, good old Eagle Rock’s here to stay,
I’m just crazy ’bout the way we move,
Doin’ the Eagle Rock.
Oh Oh Oh come on fast, you can come on slow
I’m just crazy ’bout the way we move,
Doin’ the Eagle Rock.

Go momma!
Well you’re rockin’ fine!
Why don’t you give me a sign?
Just gotta give me a sign and we’ll do the Eagle Rock.
Oh baby!
Well I feel so free!
Hmm what you do to me!
What you do to me when we do the Eagle Rock.

Now listen,
More we’re steppin’ out.
Yeah, gonna turn around,
Gonna turn around once and we’ll do the Eagle Rock.

Doin’ the Eagle Rock.
Doin’ the Eagle Rock.
Doin’ the Eagle Rock.

Edit (15/12/16) I’ve just got now included the live version from just the other day @ 2016 Meredith Music Festival.
