Wicked Songs: Cloudbusting by Kate Bush

This just has to be my fave Kate Bush song of all-time. So it seems is the very last song on Before The Dawn, the new live album or are you suppose to call it a box-set? It’s like three or four discs or something. It’s been two years since the shows taken place, it was back in 2014 you know? I haven’t pre-ordered it yet but most likely get it straight away, I love Kate Bush and wished I did see that show.

I had a post about some 80’s songs a week or two ago now but Kate somehow needs a whole post to herself with this song, she was on that CountDown TV show back then because she is a big name but she stands by herself really. Kind-off like Prince too, an artist also very 80’s but so much more import to the decade. Cloudbusting is the fifth track on her 1985 album Hounds Of Love and the song was released as second single. The video clip stars movie actor Donald Sutherland and is like a little mini version too, tell the story of the song in more detail. Wilhelm Reich was the inspiration for Bush, ten years earlier another songwriter wrote a song another about him. Patti Smith’s Birdland also re-tells his story too, I’ve written a blog post about that track. Both came about after reading the book by Reich’s son, Peter and his memoir A Book of Dreams published in 1973. In the video Kate’s playing Peter and Donald is his father and shows his arrest by the government and everything, the first line she even sung Orgonon too. It’s just got to be one of the greatest 80’s songs so here below is the lyrics and the single cover artwork.

Cloudbusting lyrics

I still dream of Orgonon
I wake up crying
You’re making rain
And you’re just in reach
When you and sleep escape me

You’re like my yo-yo
That glowed in the dark
What made it special
Made it dangerous
So I bury it
And forget

But every time it rains
You’re here in my head
Like the sun coming out
Ooh, I just know that something good is going to happen
And I don’t know when
But just saying it could even make it happen

On top of the world
Looking over the edge
You could see them coming
You looked too small
In their big, black car
To be a threat to the men in power

I hid my yo-yo
In the garden
I can’t hide you
From the government
Oh, God, Daddy
I won’t forget

‘Cause every time it rains
You’re here in my head
Like the sun coming out
Ooh, I just know that something good is going to happen
And I don’t know when
But just saying it could even make it happen

The sun’s coming out.
Your son’s coming out

My fave Kate Bush album is Aerial from 2005, I think overall it’s a better listening than those 80’s albums and even her 70’s and 90’s albums too but I now it’s on the list of my Classic Albums to write, I better get on and write all these posts because this list is just getting bigger and bigger and I’ve only done half a dozen so far. Who wants more Classic Albums post? I do, I guess but does anyone else? So what’s everybody’s else fave Kate Bush song/s?
