Cover Versions: Ed Kuepper’s This Hideous Place by Oh Mercy

Well, Wednesday’s posts and sorry to anyone who care’s about me missing yesterday. Anyway here is a new cover of old Aussie 90’s indie rock classic. Ed Kuepper featured pretty heavily here on my blog in January after seeing him play a wicked and great show. I did have a go at writing about 40 years since The Saints’ (I’m) Stranded album, 1984’s Laughing Clowns’ Law Of Nature album, 2007’s Ed Kuepper’s solo album Jean Lee And The Yellow Dog, Kuepper’s own Johnny Cash’s cover of Ring Of Fire plus as a bit of a bonus thingy when Ed and Chris from The Saints joined The Bad Seeds too.

I’ve yet to write about Oh Mercy here on my blog so it’s pretty much Aussie singer-songwriter Alex Gow going under and named after Bob Dylan’s 1989 album. He got four album of his own, can you guess which one is my fave? I’ve really got to write something about that now in my tagged Classic Albums. Anyway Alex toured last year with Dan Kelly and Dan show him, he heard this track and now he’s covered it. Just put it up yesterday on his SoundCloud.

So This Hideous Place from Ed Kuepper 1993 album Serene Machine and from some under known reason to me, I’ve used that album cover as the main image today. It’s just so Aussie that photo on the album cover artwork, back fence of rushy tin and wood with outside toilet. This Hideous Place was a single and video from the album so I’ve include the original below with the lyrics too.

This Hideous Place lyrics by Ed Kuepper

Baby, won’t you go?
I know you’d like to go
From this hideous place
this is our chance
Our only chance
There’s so much history
That the mystery to me
Is why we just haven’t left
It’s not even as though we dance
And if the signs on the road
Are confusing
We’ll look straight ahead
Not behind and ignore them
I know that I sound
Like a petrol commercial
But, baby the way
That I feel there are worse things
This place has my head
Filled with poison thoughts
There is no peace to be bought
There’s no chance
There’s no romance
No need to pack
We’ll leave the baggage behind
Leave everything I don’t mind
There’ll be new things
You’ll find I don’t mind
And if the signs on the road
Are confusing
We’ll look straight ahead
Not behind and ignore them
I know that I sound
Like a petrol commercial
But baby, the way
That I feel there are worse things
