So this is only the twentieth Aussie album to be chosen just to prove I’m just getting started here, guess it’s pretty cool I’ve got to number 20 but overall it’s 57 now so I’ve got a long way to go. I’ve just got to include this record today in my Classic Albums for my Wednesday’s post. This weekend just gone was a long weekend over east, I don’t know what one but it should be re-named Golden Plains because that’s the festival name in a small town called Meredith, about two hours away from Melbourne. I missed this year but last year, oh my god it was like the best fest I’ve ever been to in my life, this was the headlining band. So one year gone I’ve just got to say a little about my fave album of there’s, they played all these songs there last year too. They did play one more show in Tassie last year after that show but they have gone totally quiet again. So I’m very happy I got to see them then.
Eddy Current Suppression Ring like a 2000’s garage punk rock band from Melbourne, last year’s show was a bit of a reunion after a long break. The Primary Colours album was the second album of three at that time, then they called for that break and until last year that was it. Four piece band and if you not heard the story of them, all four members working at Melbourne’s only vinyl record pressing factory and the first time playing together was a jam at the drunk Xmas party you’ve heard it now, that’s how they formed the band Eddy Current Suppression Ring. The three guys were playing the guitar, drums and bass and then guitar player Eddy Current (real name Mikey Young) suggestion for Brendan Suppression (real name Brendan Huntley) to sing he grabbed a microphone.
I don’t know how to put it about Brendan, some just call him a person with disability. After that last gig I’ll say he one of the greatest front-man and/or singer ever! After the very last song of the set he did stand at side of stage, just when I watching from too and he was just off stage but more kind-of on and looked out at the crowd screaming, not moving a muscle. Until Mikey tapped him on the shoulder and then played an very rare encore at Meredith. I was told after by someone who goes each year, that’s only happened once/twice before in like 30 years and I forgotten now who it was then but the place was going nuts for more for them. Oh, the rhythm section are Danny Current (real name Danny Young) on drum and Rob Solid (real name Brad Barry) on bass too.
Back when the album was released it won the pretty newish Australian Music Prize, kind-of like Mercury Prize in the UK. I think if my memory is right it was only the fourth year, this year’s one was just announced the other day with the great rappers A.B. Original‘s Reclaim Australia album winning. Got to write about that at some point.
ECSR amazingly did the Primary Colours album recording in 24 hours over a night and the next day on a eight-track recording and cost $1500 to make. I don’t know if I’ve said here before, maybe somewhere I’m an artist so naming an album after the primary colours is cool, the English band The Horrors had an album with the same name about a year later too. The art cover is red but inside is blue and yellow and I guess you can fold in so those can be the cover if you wanna. Brendan Huntley is also a visual artists, painter and please check out his art here.
So else loves ECSR here or going to enjoy them now?
