Cover Versions: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Here Comes My Girl by Sun Kil Moon with Magik*Magik Orchestra

OK, so that was a hopeless week blogging but here’s a Saturday morning cover post which you might not heard yet? It’s a discovery while I was looking for something else but I just can’t help but post it up here to share with anyone else who’s missed it now! At only 85 views on YouTube when I watched/listened to it so maybe a lot have missed it? I’ve got to included it in the never ending Sun Kil Moon/Mark Kozelek covers. Could be up there with any act you can think of that performs a lot of covers eg: cover bands or I can’t think of any other singer who does do so much of them? Can you?

I’ve got just a few covers by him here on my blog, you know? So here’s Bowie’s Win with Mike Patton backing vocals linked here, a couple of live Lou Reed cover songs linked here, Elliott Smith studio recording cover linked here and one Leonard Cohen song with more than one version of the very same song here. Plus if you wanna check out his last full album of covers called Sings Favorites that’s also linked here. Maybe my all-time fave cover ever by anyone when SKM did Nick Cave’s The Weeping Song, linked here too.

Here Comes My Girl cover be found on the Limited Edition CD available FREE! with all purchases at http://www.caldoverderecords.com beginning in January, 2018. That’s Mark’s own record label. It’s track number four on a Free CD called Sun Kil Moon with Magik*Magik Orchestra Live In Chicago. Yeah, it’s a free CD and no, not a typo!

Here Comes My Girl was written by Michael W. Campbell and Tom Petty on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ album Damn the Torpedoes was the second song on the track-list and was released in 1979, the third Heartbreakers album and this was the third single lifted from that album too.

Here Comes My Girl lyrics

You know sometimes, I don’t know why
But this old town just seems so hopeless
I ain’t really sure, but it seems I remember the good times
Were just a little bit more in focus

But when she puts her arms around me
I can somehow rise above it
Yeah, man when I got that little girl standin’ right by my side
You know, I can tell the whole wide world to shove it, hey

Here comes my girl
Here comes my girl
Yeah, and she looks so right
She is all I need tonight

Every now and then I get down to the end of the day
I have to stop and ask myself why I’ve done it
It just seems so useless to have to work so hard
And nothin’ ever really seems to come from it

But then she looks me in the eye and says
“We’re gonna last forever”
And man, you know I can’t begin to doubt it
No, ’cause it just feels so good, so free and so right
I know we ain’t never goin’ to change our minds about it, hey

Here comes my girl
Here comes my girl
Yeah, and she looks so right
She is all I need tonight (watch her walk)

Every time it seems like there ain’t nothin’ left no more
I find myself having to reach out and grab hold of something
Yeah, I just catch myself wondering, waiting, worrying
About some silly little things that don’t add up to nothin’

And then she looks me in the eye, says
“We’re gonna last forever”
And man, you know I can’t begin to doubt it
No, ’cause it just feels so good, so free and so right
I know we ain’t never gonna’ to change our minds about it, hey

Here comes my girl
Here comes my girl
Yeah, and she looks so right
She is all I need tonight

So here’s the original album cover without Mark’s head added on top of Tom’s!

 Hope someone’s dug this cover?

Cheers 🙂
