Song Lyric Sunday Theme: Brother/Sister

OK, well I’ve been pretty bad blogging SLS for both April and March but if it makes any sense in a modern online world I’ve been offline for those, so sorry to Helen and anyone else who care? I’ve got to be more apologetic because I’ve picked a song that I can’t find the lyrics too! I’ve even got the reissue with something like 25 pages of liner notes but no words to the tracks. Plus I can’t be stuff listening and typing them all out. I love Archie’s track so it’s staying at the top of the page but I’ll pick both a Brother and Sister song each down this post.

Sister Brother is the seventh track on Roach’s debut album called Charcoal Lane from 1990 which I did name as one of my classic albums of all-time and wrote a blog post about it here, if you’ll like more of my monkey gibber? I don’t know think I would be the only one calling it a classic album? Archie Roach is a great Aussie singer-songwriter who’s an indigenous so maybe never totally mainstream artist. Anyway hope everyone who press plays enjoys it?

Edit: Here’s a live version at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Edit: Here’s it on spotify too!

Oh, sister, when I come to lie in your arms
You should not treat me like a stranger
Our Father would not like the way that you act
And you must realize the danger
Oh, sister, am I not a brother to you
And one deserving of affection?
And is our purpose not the same on this earth
To love and follow his direction?
We grew up together
From the cradle to the grave
We died and were reborn
And then mysteriously saved
Oh, sister, when I come to knock on your door
Don’t turn away, you’ll create sorrow
Time is an ocean but it ends at the shore
You may not see me tomorrow

Oh Sister written by Bob Dylan in the 70’s but because he don’t like youtube much that’s Aussies The Drones and Adalita with JP Shilo on violin playing it live in Sydney a few years back.

Though I never met you
And we spoke not a word
I’ll never forget you through the stories that I’ve heard
For you, unknown brother, my baby’s mother’s pain
‘Cause your soul is in heaven but your memory remains
Unknown, unknown brother
I’ll meet you someday
Unknown, unknown brother
We’ll walk through fields where children play
Your eyes shined bright when you were a kid
Your sisters loved you and all that you did
Big brother, big brother don’t worry a bit
Your flame has not faded since the day it was lit
Your life was joy
You’re mama’s only boy
And when the skies are blue
Big brother, they’re blue for you
We’ll smile like pictures of you as a boy
Before you retired to heavenly joy
Unknown, unknown brother
I’ll meet you someday
Unknown, unknown brother
We’ll walk through fields where children play

Unknown Brother songwriters are Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney or better known as The Black Keys which on the album called Brothers, you know?

Cheers 🙂

    1. Well, maybe I should stop picking obscurer Aussie songs too? I’ve given up on youtube so I’ve now added it on spotify but maybe that will not work too?

  1. I really enjoyed all the songs you picked here, but I also enjoyed the last one the best. I think the Archie song was just hard to understand what he was singing on the live version and I couldn’t access the other versions either. Thanks so much for sharing! 🙂
