Top Ten Tracks: Metallica

So what 80’s act can I follow Madonna with in my top ten posts? How about Metallica! They’re now on yet another world tour but I totally disliked that last new album Hard-Wired from two years ago, everyone else seem to think it was totally great.

Warning: I will be including some of metalheads most hated moments of Metallica in my top ten, it’s my ten and NOT yours! So the hell who knows if anyone on earth will agree with my ten songs?

(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth – Kill ‘Em All (1983)

Fade To Black – Ride the Lightning (1984)

Orion – Master of Puppets (1986)

Crash Course In Brain Surgery The $5.98 E.P. Garage Days (1987)

Harvester Of Sorrow – …And Justice for All (1988)

To Live Is To Die – …And Justice for All (1988)

Don’t Tread On Me – The Black Album (1991)

Until It Sleeps Load (1996)

Low Man’s Lyric Reload (1997)

Lou Reed & MetallicaJunior Dad – Lulu (2011)

First three songs are from Cliff Burton era from 1982 to 1986 which ended him passing away in a bus crash. He features pretty heavy in them all, opening track is basically his bass solo and I think, almost all the third song was down to him. The second track the very first big power ballad but still have the trash metal bit too.

Then begins Jason Newsted era from 1987 to 1999 and he win out with the most tracks in my ten but off course he’s got pretty much zero songwriting credits to his name and Cliff even gets another one posthumously on track six above. Fourth track is a cover song originally by Budgie in 1971. Everyone can heard what could have been with the then new bass player. Then I’m picking two tracks from the second side of the fourth album, now you know my fave metal-lick-a album and the one which going to be in my fave albums list sometime …And Justice for All album was reissued just last week as huge box-set. This was them really as just the drums and two guitars line-up because they mixed out all the bass on that album plus their very last real trash metal album. In the 90’s we see a totally different band or a new way of songwriting and some say the beginning of the end too but my seventh track above could be one of the most heaviest from that mega-seller album.

Then the last three tracks I’ve got one song for three albums everyone love to hate but I do enjoy these songs so much. Bassist Robert Trujillo joined them in 2003 to present but he’s only got one track here in my ten. I would say the very last track is my all-time fave by them plus it’s got special help by Lou Reed, no joke I’ve even already wrote my total love for this project in a whole blog post about two years ago on that album too and it’s link here if you wanna look now?

  1. I loved the last album… Lulu was the only Metallica Release I couldn’t find something to love on (so well done putting a track in here from that). They’re like Queen or The Beatles in my house. A powerhouse band. My favourite tune by them is probably One… or Master Of Puppets… or Of Wolf And Man… or Creeping Death… or The Memory Remains… or No Leaf Clover

  2. Very interesting Top Ten… Its really nice to see Load/Reload on some sort of ranking, everyone seems to diss those albums and, perhaps rightfully-so in a sense, but they’re loved by me for sure. I’m not sure why people hate artists for going into different directions, its their life not yours, they don’t owe you anything!

You seem to enjoy the softer/groovier (?) side of Metallica, with the instrumental picks and the Harvester/Tread duo which are both pretty similar.

    Good list!
