Song of the Day: Ain’t Gonna Rain Anymore by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

So the working title of this track was The Rain Song and before that was called Weather Girl, it’s track number eight on 1994’s Let Love In album. The earliest song Warren Ellis plays violin on all The Bad Seeds’ albums but funny story is Cave himself does’t remember him on that sessions at all! It’s one of the last Melbourne recording sessions they did as a band, local legend Spencer P. Jones sings backing vocals on this track too! Some recordings were made at the very same time for 1996’s Murder Ballads album and then the final Bad Seeds Melbourne album was 2003’s Nocturama. Well, as for the moment but now with no band members living in that city I doubt it will happen again. Do you know the only Aussie Bad Seeds member that still lives in Australia is now the bass player Marty P. Casey, who live in Perth, W.A. I think, I’ve got very side track but go figure?

This now makes NC third sung song in my SOFD posts, last one was early 80’s side-project Tuff Monks linked here and mid-2000’s Abattoir Blues linked here which was done last year! He’s now the winning/leading artist in my SOTD posts, does anyone care? Could be NC as the weatherman for Australia in 2020 or the future? I think, it’s only rain twice since summer ended and they’re saying could be driest winter again! Anyway he’s not really singing about the bloody weather, here’s his lyrics:

Once there came a storm, the form of a girl
It blew to pieces my snug little world
Sometimes I swear I can still hear it howl
Down through the wreckage and the ruins
And it ain’t gonna rain anymore
Now my baby’s gone
And it ain’t gonna rain anymore
Now my baby’s gone
Now the storm has passed over me
I’m left adrift on a dead calm sea
And watch her forever through the cracks in the beams
Nailed across the doorways of the bedrooms of my dreams
And it ain’t gonna rain anymore
Now my baby’s gone
And it ain’t gonna rain anymore
Now my baby’s gone
Baby’s gone
Now I have no one to hold
Now I’m all alone again
It ain’t too hot but it ain’t too cold
And there’s no sign of rain
And it ain’t gonna rain anymore
Now my baby’s gone
And it ain’t gonna rain anymore
Now my baby’s gone
And I’m on my own
She ain’t coming back no more
She ain’t coming back no more
She ain’t coming back no more
Say what you will, I don’t care
And it ain’t gonna rain anymore
Now my baby’s gone, yeah
And it ain’t gonna rain anymore
Now my baby has gone

The extra bonus songs today are: while doing my endless NC cover posts a while ago, a band called Moonlamb Project from Belgium shared their cover of this song with me! Now I’m doing a post on just this song here’s their whole cover songs EP entitled Derivative Blues which I enjoy so you might too:

    1. Oh well, he did write his Weather Diaries in the early 2000’s too but didn’t really do anything with them and i think, that’s as far as he’s taken that! 🙂
