Great Watching: The Straight Story (1999)

OK, here’s something I’ve hinted at the whole time while I’ve been blogging but not really done before! Well, I guess I’ve got very, very, very close a few times but here’s a post just about a movie which I think, has to be a bit of a favorite film! It’s the very first movie I’d watched in 2021, after a few years not watching it so I figured it’s time to re-watch. I guess, maybe the reason could be, as the world or at least the human race falls apart in more than one way. Just watching a pretty simply film about an old bloke riding his lawnmower across America which seems like it’s been filmed in slow-motion but is just sweet, sad, beauty story but I do know some have called it a boring movie so might not be for everyone?

It’s David Lynch while making this film!

If you’ve never heard of this film before? Or maybe have but forgetting it? The first thing is that’s it is director by David Lynch but is his only G rated movie ever! Which might sound very odd for him but before this was put out I always wanted him to do something without any sex and violence. It’s really his greatest road movie he’s made in my opinion! It’s also still full of weird and wonderful people and is totally small town world which in almost is in a lot of his films.

Walt Disney put up some of money but it’s not really or far from a kids movie or any movie they had before, DL and the movie itself at the time of release copped a lot of shit about the Walt Disney involvement, imbd website’s movie page under their crazy credits bit has Walt Disney Pictures Presents: A film by David Lynch, which I remember seeing it in the cinema just laughing out loud, being the opening and everyone else so quite the person I was with asked me what so funny? DL doesn’t have a writing credit which is something like only his third movie without one but is written by John Roach & Mary Sweeney, who Mary has worked with David for years before so once shown the script to him, he was openly weeping and really wanted to make it. It’s based on a true story too!

Here’s the real life Alvin Straight!

Starring Richard Farnsworth as Alvin Straight, the old bloke on the lawnmower and the actor soon after finishing making this film did pass away so his last movie. Someone I’ve wanted to see in one of his movies for a longtime is Sissy Spacek as Rose Straight, Alvin’s daughter and Harry Dean Stanton as Lyle, Alvin’s brother and a lot of the cast from the small towns they were filming in and weren’t even real actors. My most fave bit has to be the deer lady, I guess that would be the most violence bit but is so funny too! I think, this film was a wicked way to close David Lynch’s 90’s work as well!

So I normally my blog is mainly about music, you know? I’ve got to included the movie’s music! From 1949 Happy Times as performed by Jo Stafford:

A band called The Radio Ranch Straight Shooters do a couple of songs, I could never find them at all anywhere? But one is a very old song written by Spade Cooley titled Y’Ready from 1955:

The other track by The Radio Ranch Straight Shooters is called Solo Spin Out and something called The Most Requested Song (From Strange Tales of the Late West) by Middlejohn & John Neff are nowhere to be found anywhere? John Neff is a guitar player and pops up on David Lynch stuff after this movie but as far as I know this was the first project together but who know who Middlejohn is, I haven’t a clue? Angelo Badalamenti does the film’s score who Lynch’s music guy since 1986 which the couple songs above were never on the soundtrack album CD which I still have but here’s the full soundtrack on YouTube, if you want to check it out?

That’s pretty much it or all I’ll like to say about it, I think? Have you seen it yet? If you’re in Australia it’s on SBS streaming website until end of September this year, linked here if you wanna look? Watched it weeks ago now but fuckin’ about not posting it until, well right now as you can see! Since then I’ve watch some other stuff but I don’t think I’ll blog about them but have started on the whole Twin Peaks again. So more Lynch stuff which haven’t try to write anything about that yet, maybe should? Who want like to see some movie/TV posts by me sometimes, please let me know?

One of the movie’s poster/flyer I found online!

Cheers! πŸ™‚

  2. Having read this I believed it was really informative. I appreciate you finding the time and effort to put this short article together. I once again find myself personally spending a lot of time both reading and commenting. But so what, it was still worthwhile!πŸ”₯ 😐 2021-06-28 15h 05min 37sec
