Top 10 Tracks: The 60’s Songs list

So this Monday morning and this week coming for the next four days at least, I’m bring back my TTT posts! With my own personal most favorite songs of those four last decades of the 20th century and starting where it all changed! I don’t know if you need to tell you about the sixties, do I? So let’s skip to just the music almost straight away, some tiny rules this time around: only one track per artist in each ten years timeline but any song over that time period can be chosen! I’ve picked some hit singles but some are just album tracks that I love so much more than the huge hits, you know me by now? Well, maybe this might be the first time looking at this mad little blog? I don’t know! Anyway, to me these are the very, very, very best songs that sum up or they’re my own top go-to tracks of the whole 60’s. Intro over and done so here are my top ten tracks in no particular order, just hopefully a good/great flow?

I Hate You by The Monks from Black Monk Time (1966):

One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong by Leonard Cohen from Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967):

Ode To Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry from Ode to Billie Joe (1967):

Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again by Bob Dylan from Blonde On Blonde (1966):

Pushin’ Too Hard by The Seeds from The Seeds (1966):

Heroin by The Velvet Underground from The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967):

I Wanna Be Your Dog by The Stooges from The Stooges (1969):

Astronomy Domine by Pink Floyd from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967):

Sad Dark Eyes by The Loved Ones from Magic Box (1968):

I Started A Joke by Bee Gees from Idea (1968):

OK, should I have gone into more detail about each song or something? Also all tracks seem to be from the second half and almost all or a huge part of them can be filed under proto-punk or garage rock. So for those who have followed me and my blog for a while, you seen/heard all these songs or me name-dropping them before sometime? You could really saying I’m just repeating myself yet again? Other music styles: Bee Gees can be my fave Pop song, Lenny would be my fave Folk track, Pinky can have my fave Psych track, Bobbie G would be fave C&W song and I guess, Bobby D is doing his Folk Rock or whatever you like to call Dylan? Most are North American acts, Cohen was from Canada you know? All parts of U.S.A. seems to be covered, if you look at where everyone else was from? Stooges from Michigan state recording in New York, Velvet were just so very New York, Seeds were Californian band, Dylan came from the mid-west but that was recorded Nashville, Gentry was from Mississippi but that was recorded in California, Monks were Americas but formed the band while in Germany and broken-up when they got home. The Loved Ones is favorite Aussie home-grown song because Bee Gees really were British but by this stage they’re based in U.S.A. Floyd was the other only English act, off course. Yeah, I know it is missing some of the very biggest names but that’s what/who the 60’s is toooo me! Any questions? Please let me know what you think of them, if you like? Or maybe, your own top ten from those ten years, if you’ve made one yourself before or maybe come up with one now yourself?

BTW all my older TTT posts are linked here, if you missed them the first time or want to check them out again or whatever? It seem it’s almost all by artists with mix of big names and fave acts but did do a couple of record labels at the tail end of the last pile of posts. I’ve been looking back at them, edited dead videos to ones that do play!

End note and now edited: fuck American presidents, let’s changed the feature image to more movies which are most likely all going to be from America anyway but at least it’s NOT pollies anymore!

Scream, it’s Janet Leigh as Marion Crane in the famous Psycho shower scene!

Cheers! 🙂

  1. Interesting song choices, as always, William. “Ode to Billie Joe” is one of my faves of the 60s too. Some of these I know, like “Pushin’ Too Hard”, “Heroin” and “I Started a Joke”, but the others are new to me.

    1. Light My Fire (extended album version) – The Doors
    2. California Dreamin’ – Mamas & Papas
    3. She Loves You – Beatles
    4. (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction – Rolling Stones
    5. Hey Jude – Beatles
    6. White Rabbit – Jefferson Airplane
    7. Aquarius (Let the Sunshine In) – 5th Dimension
    8. I Heard it Through the Grapevine – Marvin Gaye
    9. You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ – Righteous Brothers
