My Favorite 200 Aussie Albums Of All Time: Part 28

My Favorite 200 Aussie Albums Of All Time: Part 28

Ok, almost didn’t make it for my weekly post! Maybe, no one would really noticed if I didn’t? Anyway it’s posting on Sunday morning this week with five more great Australian albums! Finally finishing all albums under the letter “P” plus only one album under letter “Q” tooooo! Albums date from early 80’s to almost mid 2010’s and below are LPs by Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Rowland S. Howard, Scott & Charlene’s Wedding, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and The Reels.

Primary Colours by Eddy Current Suppression Ring (2008)

Their second album which was recorded at Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne over one non-stop 24-hour session over the night of 3rd of August 2007 and part of the following day. It peaked at No. 13 on the ARIA Chart at the time of release. It won the Australian Music Prize (AMP Award) in 2008 and was nominated for the ARIA Award that same year for best rock album, off course it lost that one. Was listed in that Aussie Rolling Stone rag at number 41 in The 200 Greatest Australian Albums of All-time. Guitarist Eddy Current who’s real name is Mikey Young has appeared in a couple of these posts of mine before with Henge Beat by Total Control of 2011 linked here and the Self-Titled album by Moon Rituals of 2018 linked here, both those came after this one listed today. Anyway the song calledWhich Way To Go has a very Aussie beach video clip:

Colour Television would be my fave song which has a fan made vid:

Steam album on bandcamp:

Pop Crimes by Rowland S. Howard (2009)

Was his second and to be final solo album which was released in October 2009 so that’s ten years after Howard’s previous solo album Teenage Snuff Film and Two and half months before his death from liver cancer on 30 December. Behind him is Mick Harvey on drums and keyboards so having a bit of a mini The Birthday Party reunion, J.P. Shilo joins them on violins, bass on some songs and credited for “general strangeness”. Both HTRK members Jonnine Standish and Sean Stewart are on the first track plus Brian Hooper plays bass on a couple of tracks, as well. Really should have been celebrated as one of the greatest swan song in Australian music history but this album came and when here with very little fanfare. Anyway the epic closing song The Golden Age Of Bloodshed has an official video with footage of one of Howard’s final shows and just listen to what he has to say just before starting to play:

Duetting with HTRK’s Jonnine Standish on the opening track entitled (I Know A Girl Called) Jonny:

Steam album on bandcamp:

Para Vista Social Club by Scott & Charlene’s Wedding (2010)

Band’s name is after Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell who were fictional characters on Australian soap opera TV show Neighbours, Scott was portrayed by Jason Donovan and Charlene was portrayed by Kylie Minogue. Somehow if you missed it? Got married on that TV show and band’s singer-songwriter Craig Dermody did say in an interview linked here “I remember sitting down and watching it with my mum… I remember the wedding being massive, it was as if it was a real wedding. Like a royal wedding, but in Australia.” Dermody is from Adelaide but formed this band in 2006 in Melbourne and this is their debut album, Para Vista is a suburb in northern Adelaide. The song named after Footscray Station was the albums breakout track but didn’t have video clip:

Keeping with the train theme with my fave, here’s the track entitled Epping Line:

Steam album on bandcamp:

Push The Sky Away by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (2013)

Their fifteenth studio album and latest NC&TBS I’ve included in my list, the best one of 2010’s album by them in my opinion. Most liking now over shadow by albums that came after this album. Leaving longtime label Mute Records and starting his own, recorded at La Fabrique in southern France, band’s first album not to feature founding member Mick Harvey but marked the return of founding member Barry Adamson. Also was the last album to feature keyboardist/pianist Conway Savage, prior to passing away in 2018. The cover image shows Cave opening a window shutter to shining light on his naked wife Susie Bick, the photo was out-take for fashion shoot and was taken in the couple’s own bedroom. It became their first Australian chart topper which debuted at number 1 on the ARIA Charts. One of video clip songs is pretty much my favorite song, worth to note this version of Higgs Boson Blues is much longer than the one on the album:

After that song I think the closing title track would be my fave:

Quasimodo’s Dream by The Reels (1981)

Their second album and at the time of release it peaked in at number 27 on the Australian chart. This album contains the iconic title track and later on was voted as number 10 on APRA’s list of Top 30 Australian songs. More singles from the album were put out at the time which included After the News and Shout and Deliver plus the song According to My Heart which was a cover of the 1961 Jim Reeves song was included on the album against the wishes of the band but it result in a sticker on the inner sleeve that said “Due to Record Company Pressure This Album Contains The Hit Single According To My Heart”. Album was numbered 34 in that book The 100 Best Australian Albums and Aussie Rolling Stone mag listed it at number 184 in The 200 Greatest Australian Albums of All-time, both I’ve typed about before in these posts. Here’s the classic title track Quasimodo’s Dream promo video clip:

My favorite track would be Kitchen Man, here’s the band on Aussie TV show Rock Arena playing that track:

So that’s three out of five on bandcamp, which one did you enjoy the most?

Cheers! 🙂

I had a beer just the other day with Dave. Did you know that there is a brewery in Dubbo that produces Quasimodo’s Dream Pale Ale?
The Dubbo art gallery had an exhibition of Reels stuff, and that night Dave played with Brendon Gallagher at a local music shop. Craig Hooper, who I have not seen in maybe 40 years, turned up and played guitar. Great night!

Well, I'm dyslexic so writing about something I love: Music, might help but it's most likely just full of mistakes. That title is also lyrics from The Drones song called I Don't Want To Change. Oh, my name is William and thanks for having a look.
