Playlist: Where I Was In… 1971?

Playlist: Where I Was In… 1971?

Well, I didn’t even exist then but it’s bloody great year for music then and here’s my own top 30 tracks! If you wanna have a listen? Now I wasn’t really going to go this far back when I started doing this, you know? But I’ve changed my mind, they’re some great tunes.

Plus it also re-minded me I was listening that 1001 albums book last year too, which I haven’t done for a while if you’ve noticed? Or maybe not? I got a bit sick and tired of all that so I was giving it a break. Off course, this was one of the few years in full I’ve done and some acts are double up here but I think I did say at the time I love them. Here’s the link to that post if you wanna see it again or if you haven’t yet?

I’m starting with half a dozen Aussie acts. Then they’re about half English/Irish and American/Canadian, is that OK saying those together in the same breath? It’s like Kiwis don’t like to be called Aussies so sorry about that, if offend! I’ve got a couple or more cross-overs like Howlin’ Wolf is playing his The London Sessions album, yeah that’s what’s called. Eric Clapton makes it into my blog finally by playing on that but even if it’s just re-recording his old songs again I love it. The French and Germans are also included with two Japanese by way of Damo Suzuki singing with German group called Can and then Yoko Ono who off course she married some English bloke you might have heard off and they both when and lived in American by this stage. A couple of covers of old Robert Johnson blues tracks and John Lee Hooker, George Harrison covers too plus a few other songwriters credits I should give but lets just get on with it now!

So all the (Edit 14/7/19) updated 50 songs are or should be:

  • Wendy Saddington And The Copperwine – Backlash Blues
  • Chain – Thirty Two Twenty Blues
  • Daddy Cool – Eagle Rock
  • Lobby Loyde – Everybody Come Together

Went straight to Gainsbourg whom I’m listening to now! Had no idea Bonnie Raitt went that far back. Can I ask you for advice? I’m writing something and I need to listen to something either tragicomic or ironic from 1999 and preferably a single release: any ideas?!

Well, would Mule Variations by Tom Waits fit or work for you or that?
Yeah she did, that’s from her self-titled debut album which is epic great even if she is really young but she got her thing going already then!

I’m looking for something rather mainstream … but am all out of ideas. Theme for a chapter in a novel – definitely has to have ironic lyric though!

So you’ve googled 1999 mainstream hits lyrics already, I guess? And can’t find anything that will fit into what you need?

For 1998 I’m using Ray of Light, Madonna and for 2000 Groovejet (If This Ain’t Light) …

Well, I know Ray but don’t know the other one whatever it is called? at all so maybe I’m the wrong person to ask? Looking it up it’s the year Britney, Backstreet Boys and TLC were big but you most likely know that already? None of those work/fit?

Celine Dion My Heart Will Go On would work in a (pathetic-ironic) way but the TITANIC association is a little much

That’s a good idea but wasn’t that one earlier? I really don’t mind that track or shouldn’t I say that on my blog?

What about Ricky Martin’s Livin’ La Vida Loca and then you can included Every F***ing City by Paul Kelly as a footnote or something?

Nice one! Really like that! My book is going from 1969 to 2001 and then back to 1965 and 1962 and finishes up 2022-04 and I’m using a song for every chapter. You could say I’m… confused.

2002 to 2004. Christ. Yeah Kelly’s lyric is incredibly apt!

I was around in 1971, and remember many great songs from that year. In addition to ‘How Can You Mend A Broken Heart’ and ‘Superstar,’ some of my other personal favorites include ‘It’s Too Late’ by Carole King, ‘Maggie May’ by Rod Stewart, ‘Just My Imagination’ by The Temptations, and ‘Uncle Albert & Admiral Halsey’ by Paul & Linda McCartney.

Oh yeah, a lot did missed out but i think it’s going to be expanded list/s now and these are just my first cuts to make it, my 95 and 85 lists have already been added tooo!
Thanks for letting me know your couple of faves and what else you dig! It’s always interesting what everyone digs! I know a love ‘Maggie May’ which maybe I might add right now but never been a big King, Temptations or McCartney fan but will look those tracks up and have a listen!
      Cheers 🙂

Well, I'm dyslexic so writing about something I love: Music, might help but it's most likely just full of mistakes. That title is also lyrics from The Drones song called I Don't Want To Change. Oh, my name is William and thanks for having a look.
