Song of the Day: Afterlife by Arcade Fire

Song of the Day: Afterlife by Arcade Fire

Monday morning starting this week is the one of the greatest Canadian indie rockers that everyone will know but I love them so much tooo! Afterlife is the second last song on Reflektor‘s second disc because it’s a double album, number twelve overall and was also released as single/video. At the moment, I seem to be thinking about all the acts I’ve seen live and it would have been around this time I finally go to see Arcade Fire live. Yeah, once again Reflektor of 2013 the fourth studio album by them would be my fave, if I was to pick just one record which is very hard to do! Which Arcade Fire album would be your own fave and does it have seeing them live memories?

Afterlife, oh my God, what an awful word
After all the breath and the dirt
And the fires that burn
And after all this time
And after all the ambulances go
And after all the hangers-on are done
Hanging on to the dead lights
Of the afterglow
I’ve gotta know
Can we work it out?
We scream and shout ’till we work it out
Can we just work it out?
Scream and shout ’till we work it out?
‘Till we work it out, ’till we work it out
‘Till we work it out, ’till we work it out
Afterlife, I think I saw what happens next
It was just a glimpse of you
Like looking through a window
Or a shallow sea
Could you see me?
And after all this time
It’s like nothing else we used to know
After all the hangers-on are done
Hanging on to the dead lights
Of the afterglow
I’ve gotta know
Can we work it out?
Let’s scream and shout ’till we work it out
Can we just work it out?
If you scream and shout ’till we work it out?
But you say
Oh, when love is gone
Where does it go?
And you say
Oh, when love is gone
Where does it go?
And where do we go?
Where do we go?
Where do we go?
Where do we go?
Where do we go?
Where do we go?
Where do we go?
Where do we go?
And after this
Can it last another night?
After all the bad advice
Had nothing at all to do with life
I’ve gotta know
Can we work it out?
Scream and shout ’till we work it out?
Can we just work it out?
Scream and shout ’till we work it out?
But you say
Oh, when love is gone
Where does it go?
And you say
Oh, when love is gone
Where does it go?
Oh, we know it’s gone
Where did it go?
Oh, we know it’s gone
Where did it go?
And where do we go?
Is this the afterlife?
It’s just an afterlife, with you
It’s just an afterlife
It’s just an afterlife, with you
It’s just an afterlife

For me, it would be a tie between ‘The Suburbs’ and ‘Reflektor’. Both are filled with such great songs. I think my favorite songs from A.F. would be:

    1. Suburbs
    2. Afterlife
    3. Everything Now
    4. Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
    5. Reflektor

Very unique, massively talented band. Always something upbeat in their songs. A spirit of enquiry, a nod towards other realms. Can’t praise Arcade Fire enough. Turned down a ticket for a 2018 show in London due to money shortages. My cousin’s son saw them play in a converted East London boxing ring and reckoned it was the best thing he ever saw. Glad you reminded me about AF!

I’m pretty much in love with their first three records and I’d be hard put to choose one of these as my favourite. I’ve seen them three times live. The first time was when they opened for U2, maybe a year after “Funeral” came out, and it was such a high energy show. I also remember seeing them headlining a night of a festival about a month before “The suburbs” came out, which was also amazing. The final time was at a huge arena for “Reflektor”, a good show as well but perhaps not my favourite show.

Yeah. They came around these parts quite often, especially at the beginning, given that they come from Montreal, which is only two hours drive from here. The drummer went to high school here, I believe.

Well, I'm dyslexic so writing about something I love: Music, might help but it's most likely just full of mistakes. That title is also lyrics from The Drones song called I Don't Want To Change. Oh, my name is William and thanks for having a look.
