Cover Versions: George Michael’s Careless Whisper by Kate Miller-Heidke & Paul Dempsey

WHAT? Princess Leia and/or her real life name Carrie Fisher has died too, that’s just totally unbelievable!

So today after reading that very sad news about her for some mad reason I when looking for an Aussie cover of George Michael’s song Careless Whisper. So I might as well share it here for anyone who would like to have a listen to it.

If you don’t know them? Kate Miller-Heidke is a solo artist who’s now up to five albums so she just put out her Best Of comp album this year. Paul Dempsey is from the band called Something For Kate and has two solo album under his name too, he’s been playing with that band for 20 years or something. Both Aussie artists which I don’t know how well they’re both known oversea? Maybe someone can tell me?

It was a live TV show recording of this duet a few years ago on SBS channel show RockWiz. Which I think they was thinking at the time it was a bit funny to have a guy from a band with Kate in it’s title and an artist with the first name of Kate but writing it on this page it don’t sound funny at all. Maybe if you’re drinking beer in a pub on a Saturday night you would find it so? It’s filmed live in an Aussie Pub in Melbourne, you know?

Anyway this song was George Michael‘s first solo single from way back in 1984 and I’ve just gotta included that original video clip below and lyrics too. It was written with his co-member of Wham! Andrew Ridgeley but was when he first when solo. It’s a big sad ballad about not wanting to dance ever again and after the very raunchy song I had the other day this could be a little more appropriate under these circumstances.

Careless Whisper lyrics

I feel so unsure
As I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor
As the music dies, something in your eyes
Calls to mind a silver screen and all its sad goodbyes

I’m never gonna dance again, guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it’s easy to pretend, I know you’re not a fool
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I’d been given
So I’m never gonna dance again, the way I danced with you

Time can never mend
The careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind, ignorance is kind
There’s no comfort in the truth, pain is all that you’ll find

I’m never gonna dance again, guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it’s easy to pretend, I know you’re not a fool
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I’d been given
So I’m never gonna dance again, the way I danced with you
Never without your love

Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it’s better this way
We’d hurt each other with the things we want to say

We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance forever
But now who’s gonna dance with me
Please stay, and…

I’m never gonna dance again, guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it’s easy to pretend, I know you’re not a fool
I should have known better than to cheat a friend
And waste a chance that I’d been given
So I’m never gonna dance again, the way I danced with you

Now that you’re gone, now that you’re gone
Now that you’re gone, was what I did so wrong, so wrong
That you had to leave me alone?

I have no idea what the link between the two of these are other than they passed away a couple of days apart?
