Gang Of Youths do Straight To You:
The brief was “Australian,” so naturally, my first instinct was Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. ‘Straight To You’ is, in my opinion, an underrated classic from an under-appreciated album — hopefully, anybody hearing the GOY version will find their way back to the original.”
I was writing this blog post and then this brand new cover pops up, which is pretty nice really! That link does work, right?

After yesterday post I’m back on Monday lunchtime with yet, even more Nick Cave! Well, I was doing this which are basically ugly covers but maybe there’s a better word? I’ve done my some faves and then the good because it’s hard to totally ruin his songs plus even the worst one ever too, as say the bad which I do kind-of enjoy in a very odd way really. So I’ve just got to do these ones, whatever the hell you would call them?
Maybe I don’t need to but I’m going to anyway, off course it’s down to personal taste too but see if you can listen to these below more than once? Or repeated a few times? Maybe to me they’re a little disappointing because I do like most of them.
Red Right Hand by FIDLAR which was covered for triple j’s Like A Version show, my most disliked cover from all the Nick JJJ covers. Works perfect for the opening song of ugly covers, I think? Sorry kids, I have no idea at all about this band but want their name in caps lock for some reason?
The Ship Song by something called The Ship Song Project made by the building the Sydney Opera House, for some reason? It’s performed by Neil Finn, Kev Carmody and The Australian Ballet, Sarah Blasko, John Bell, Angus and Julia Stone, Paul Kelly and Bangarra Dance Theatre, Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Opera Australia, Martha Wainwright, Katie Noonan and The Sydney Symphony, The Temper Trap, Daniel Johns and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. I’m just cut and paste that long-list, it’s a great list of artists but a total mess of a cover song. Which I do wonder why didn’t someone say let’s just let everyone do their own covers and we’ll have 10 or 12 versions of the same song but maybe they could only pay them all to sing one line each!
The Ship Song again gets murder by Hugo Weaving this time in an Aussie movie but I think that was the point. The film was called True Love and Chaos from the late 90’s or sometime around then. Weaving does do some more ugly Leonard Cohen covers too but he’s suppose to be a drunk rock n’ roll singer or cover band singer or something or playing the part of one. The song I Let Love In was featured in the movie too, if I’m remember things right?
Loverman by Metallica it’s near eight minutes of hell in all the wrong ways and I can listen once every few years so listening again I only just made it and now don’t want to hear it again for a very longtime but is now, off course on my blog! Oh, well I did say bloody ugliest covers and I think this is the ugliest ever of all Nick Cave covers. Metallica win again for the wrong reasons. Maybe some others might like or even love it but it’s terrible to my ears! But in a very strange way do kind-of like all these ugly covers!
Now linking my little collection of Cave covers! If you’ll missed any or just wanna listen again? And because I like to see what I’ve done already too! Sun Kil Moon’s most epic The Weeping Song which would be my all-time fave cover here, then I picked out my top 10 covers of all-time linked here, also Cave doing ten covers is here too, then The Rockdogs play live covers so numbers 11 to 16 at Aussie footy game linked here, then my fave bad cover version of all-time by guess who? linked here, then the next ten which I guess is numbers 17 to 27 linked here, then the last time I did 15 which adds numbers 28 to 42 linked here, plus last year I posted three new ones with Into My Arms by Shelby Lynne & Allison Moorer here, Red Right Hand by Iggy Pop here, Skeleton Tree by Julia Jacklin here. I’ve lost count now but must be over 50 tracks altogether? Off course, I’ve most likely missed some covers in all these posts?

Cheers 🙂
